    1) "Adults" -- As to adults attention deficit disorder

    2adult
    Function: noun
: one that is adult; especially : a human being after an age (as 21) specified by law
    - adult·like /&-'d&lt-"lIk/ adjective
    Pronunciation Symbols

The term adult describes any mature organism, but normally it refers to a human: one that is no longer a child / minor and is now either a man or a woman. Adulthood can be defined in terms of biology, law, personal character, or social status. These different aspects of adulthood are often inconsistent and contradictory. A person may be biologically an adult, and have adult behavioral characteristics but still be treated as a child if they are under the legal age of majority. Conversely one may legally be an adult but possess none of the maturity and responsibility that define adult character.

Coming of age is the event; passing a series of tests to demonstrate the child is prepared for adulthood; or reaching a specified age, sometimes in conjunction with demonstrating preparation. Most modern societies determine legal adulthood based on reaching a legally-specified age without requiring a demonstration of physical maturity or preparation for adulthood.

"Adult" also means "not considered suitable for children", in particular as a euphemism for being related to sexual behaviour, such as adult entertainment, adult video, adult magazine, adult bookstore. However, adult education simply means education for adults, not particularly sex education.

This article discusses the psychological concept of attention. For the military concept, see military courtesy.
For the Buddhist concept of attention, see mindfulness.

Attention is the cognitive process of selectively concentrating on one thing while ignoring other things. Examples include listening carefully to what someone is saying while ignoring other conversations in the room (e.g. the cocktail party effect, Cherry, 1953). Attention can also be split, as when a person drives a car and talks on a cell phone at the same time. Sometimes attention shifts to matters unrelated to the external environment, a phenomenon referred to as mind-wandering or "spontaneous thought".

Attention is one of the most intensely studied topics within psychology and cognitive neuroscience. Of the many cognitive processes associated with the human mind (decision-making, memory, emotion, etc), attention is considered the most concrete because it is tied so closely to perception. As such, it is a gateway to the rest of cognition.

One of the first major psychologists, William James, defined attention as follows:

"Everyone knows what attention is. It is the taking possession by the mind in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought...It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal effectively with others." (Principles of Psychology, 1890)

A budget deficit occurs when an entity (often a government) spends more money than it takes in. The opposite is a budget surplus.

An accumulated deficit over several years (or centuries) is referred to as the government debt. Often, a certain part of spending is dedicated to paying of debt with certain maturity, which can be refinanced by issuing new government bonds. That is, a fiscal deficit leads to an increase in an entity's debt to others. A deficit is a flow. And a debt is a stock. Debt is essentially an accumulated flow of deficits.

Since debt is the total amount one owes, a deficit can also be defined as the amount by which a debt grows or a savings decreases. For instance, prior to the Second Gulf War, many Americans confused debt and deficit, believing that the United States government still had a massive deficit; in fact, the government had a sizable surplus. The deficit was gone, but the debt was still being paid down. Because the United States government counts money it collects through its Social Security program as income, many people had also become accustomed to the notion that the deficit was far larger than it actually was, yet, even removing Social Security funds, there was a surplus. (Although the Social Security program currently collects income, the money is considered "owed" to the people who pay into the program; eventually the fund will not be able to cover its own financial obligations.)
